Gates of Vienna weighs in on House Resolution 288, proposed by Rep. John Conyers:
This is pernicious on so many levels that it’s hard to know where to start. It asserts that one person’s right to be respected overrides another person’s right to speak freely. It singles out a single religion, Islam, for special treatment. It accords the holy book of the Muslims more respect than is owed the flag of the United States.
Much more commentary on the "hate speech" phenomenon follows.

Via Overlawyered, a list of the most outrageous legal decisions of 2006. The most amusing?

In college dorm rooms are so small that the students usually end up building a loft, and to meet this demand some companies make loft beds for the more wealthy student. One such company was recently sued for $179,001 (one dollar??) why? Because it didn't have sufficient warning that you might fall out of bed. The young man in question argued that he didn't know this could happen, and a warning would have saved him injury!
It's called gravity. It works. Duh.
